When the weather turns cooler, many homeowners along the Front Range call their trusted pest control company to help them protect their home from mice, rats, spiders, and roaches. While it is easy to see an infestation occurring in your home, it is easy to forget about property that is in a storage unit; since it is out of sight, it is often out of mind. However, there are several simple tasks that can keep bugs out of storage units, and in today’s post, we will review a few of them. Check them out below and don’t forget to swing by Homestead Storage to make sure your unit is ready for fall!

How To Keep Bugs Out of Storage Units

Scope Out Your Unit Ahead of Time

Before you sign a rental agreement for your unit, take the time to scope out the facility. It is clean and well-maintained? Are trees and shrubbery trimmed away from the units? Are garbage bins tightly closed and stored away from the units? All of these conditions can help deter pests from making themselves at home in a storage facility.

Don’t Store Food or Scented Items

If you want to keep bugs out of storage units, then you should not store things that attract them. This includes any type of food, including boxed or canned items, as well as candles, bath salts, laundry detergent, and other strongly scented items. Pests are often attracted to these items, and if they find them in your unit, your pest problem could become very hard to manage.

Store Items in Containers

Cardboard boxes are often the go-to storage solution for most people. However, they make the perfect nesting spot for rodents, cockroaches, and other pests. Some pests even eat cardboard, and that can leave your belongings doubly vulnerable to damage. Plastic tubs with tightly fitting lids are much more difficult for pests to invade, and they are easier to stack.

Consider Pest Deterrents

Some of the same DIY measures you use around your home can be used in your storage unit. Peppermint is a natural pest deterrent, as is cedar. Placing peppermint-soaked cotton balls or cedar blocks in your unit can help keep pests at bay. Conventional bug sprays and traps can as well, just be sure to check the traps frequently if you use them.
